I have that there are two types of tools in our field, tools that are code heavy and tools that are UI heavy. I personally prefer the UI heavy tools and Tableau is the best. I was able to learn the tool in a days time and have been using it for the last 13 years.

3 Template Variety

For beginners, starting from scratch can be daunting. That's where templates come in handy. A platform with a diverse range of pre-designed templates allows you to jump straight into visualizing data without worrying about design principles. You can choose from various chart types and themes to find one that suits your data story. Templates should be customizable, enabling you to tweak them to better fit your data and the message you want to convey. This feature not only saves time but also inspires and guides your creative process.

A platform's value is also determined by the learning resources it offers to beginners. Comprehensive help sections, FAQs, and community forums are invaluable for troubleshooting and learning new techniques. Some platforms go the extra mile by providing in-depth video tutorials, webinars, and articles that cover everything from basic functions to advanced visualization concepts. Access to these resources can make a significant difference in how quickly you can enhance your data visualization skills.

5 Community Support

Community support can greatly influence your experience with a data visualization platform. A strong community provides a network of fellow beginners, as well as more experienced users, who can offer advice, feedback, and moral support. Platforms that foster an engaged community through forums, social media groups, or regular meetups create an environment where you can learn from others' experiences, ask questions, and share your own insights. This sense of belonging can be especially encouraging for beginners.

Hands down, for me, the Tableau community is the best. With there being a free version available, anyone can get started pretty quickly. The training materials are good but the #datafam community is ever-present in Twitter/X and LinkedIn, as well as regional and global user groups (that double as networking events). Tableau does a great job of rewarding those who contribute to the community with titles and roles like Ambassadors and Visionaries, both in the viz side and the infrastructural side (for server and APIs). The community really is the nicest, most welcoming, and supportive group of people you'll come across in the data and analytics space.

6 Feedback Features

Finally, feedback features within a platform are vital for beginners to refine their skills. Some user-friendly platforms include options for peer review or allow you to share your visuals with a wider audience for feedback. This can be an integrated feature where you can receive comments directly on your work or through sharing capabilities that let you post your visuals on external platforms. Constructive feedback is a powerful tool for improvement and learning, making it an essential component of a beginner-friendly data visualization platform.

Couple of popular data visualization platforms I think of which can offer the most user-friendly interfaces for beginners are:- Microsoft Power BI: Power BI provides a user-friendly interface with intuitive drag-and-drop features. Power BI offers a free version with limited capabilities but for beginners it can be a good starting point.- Tableau Public: This free version of the popular Tableau software is specifically designed for creating public-facing visualizations. It offers a user-friendly interface with drag-and-drop functionality and a good selection of chart types. While not as powerful as the paid Tableau version, it's a fantastic option to get your feet wet in data visualization.
